Not only is it world cup time, it’s the time of year when most of the transfers go through at club level, and the time when contracts expire. Unbelievably, some of the players at this year’s competition are playing for their Nation without a club team, so who are the best freebies at the world cup?

Frank Lampard

Frank may be getting on a bit but is still good enough to fight for a place in a youthful English midfield. Tipped for an MLS move and International retirement, he’ll be hoping to make a final impact on the World stage.

Shola Ameobi

Big Shola will be representing Nigeria in the competition. With his contract up (and not being renewed) at Newcastle, the Striker will be hoping to find a new club with some big performances this summer.

Georgios Samaras

After 6 years at Celtic, the much capped Greece forward is without a club. Still under the age of 30, he’s another who will hope for a move to Europe (or elsewhere) after a summer campaign in Brazil.

Samuel Eto’o

Another Chelsea reject, this man has won the African Player of the Year award an incredible four times and showed he can still do the business with some good showings for Chelsea this year.

Park Chu-Young


He’s been on Arsenal’s books for three long and painful years, but the South Korean striker did well in a previous spell at Monaco, and in spite of failing to impress on loan at Celta Vigo and Watford, he’ll be trying to use this tournament to revive his career, he is only 28 after all…
